Here we have a breathtaking set of 1 3/4", double flared, slightly domed face plugs made out of amber sourced from the Chiapas (Simojovel) region of Mexico. The amber from this region can be difficult to source and sometimes prohibitively expensive for quality material. We've done our best to leverage cost and quality to bring these beautiful examples to fruition. Amber is traded by the gram with the cost going up exponentially the larger the material.
These pieces are 1 3/4"/44.4mm in size with standard ~1.5mm flares. The material itself is very clear, with one side of one piece having a 1/4 face section of black inclusions. The pieces get their gold fleck look from planes within the material that were cut on the diagonal. Turning them slightly to the side you can see how the planes line up within the amber, but looking at it straight on, they overlap to form an intense gold sparkle effect.
Amber develops an immense amount of static electricity while being worked or by simply rubbing it against cloth. The ancient Maya believed that amber thus had magical properties and used it for protection and ritual. They established mining techniques and traded this "gemstone of the sun" amongst themselves and other outlying cultures. The age of the material used for these sets of plugs, based on general scientific evidence about the amber of this region, is approximately 22 million to 26 million years.
